Reflections on the impact of the diaspora on Haiti

  • SYNOPSIS: The diaspora's role in many aspects of the Haitian people's lives is immeasurable.  Are we doing enough? Better yet, could we do better? If yes, how? If not, why? Join us for an interactive dialogue about the personal, interpersonal and systemic ways the diaspora has engaged in the past continues to assist  today and explore some avenues for the future that demonstrate its renewed commitment to the advancement of Haiti as a whole.

  • This interactive conversation will explore Haiti's Independence Day Soup Joumou, a New Year's day tradition for Haitians everywhere. This soup is the trophy of victory over oppression, a powerful symbol of freedom, hope and dignity. On January 1st, 1804, St. Domingue became the Republic of Haïti, the first independent Black republic, the second independent country in the American continent and the only country that has ever emerged out of a successful slave revolt in recorded human history.
